 Barometer

A barometer is an instrument used to measure atmospheric pressure. To measure atmospheric pressure along last tube filled with mercury is dipped into a trough containing Mercury this class tube which is about 100 cm long is closed from the top and open at lower end dipped in the trough.

Ancient philosophers, like Aristotle, claim that vacuum could not exist in nature because the matter around it would fill the space created by vacuum Aristotle even postulated "That nature fears of empty space".

But Torricelli and his student Galileo Galilei proved Aristotle and other philosopher's wrong. The first experiment on a barometer was conducted using water the length of the column using water was about 10.3 m. However since mercury is denser than water its stood only 26 CM.
